A WUC is organized under supervision of the Fédération Internationale du Sport Universitaire (FISU). The FISU was founded in 1949 and its main task is to supervise WUCs and Universiades. The board of FISU consists of 141 national student sports federations. In the Netherlands this federation is called Stichting Studentensport Nederland (SSN). The main office of FISU is situated in Brussels, Belgium, where its professional board members supervise the FISU events and promotion of international student sports acitivities.
In the even years WUCs are organized, while in the odd years the Universiades take place. The Universiades are very similar to the Olympics, although the participants may only be students. In 2006 there have been WUCs in 28 sports, amounting to a total of over 5,000 participants. The competitions are of high quality and the organization must fulfill strict requirements in accommodation, catering and safety.
